If you’re in your final weeks of pregnancy, you’ve probably heard it all.
- “Eat spicy food!”
- “Bounce on a birth ball!”
- “Take castor oil!”
And of course, the question that so many women come to me with: “Does natural labor induction really exist?”
As a fertility and women’s health specialist trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and functional medicine, I’ve worked with countless pregnant women seeking natural ways to prepare their bodies for labor. And the answer is yes and no. Yes, acupuncture and holistic practices can help encourage labor—but not in the way many people think. Let’s break it down.
Induction vs. Labor Preparation: The Key Difference
A medical induction is a forced process using synthetic hormones (like Pitocin), membrane stripping, or breaking the water manually to start contractions. A natural labor preparation treatment is about supporting your body’s innate process—helping it transition into labor when it is physiologically ready. Acupuncture does not “force” labor—it facilitates what your body is already trying to do. The difference? Timing. Respecting the body’s wisdom. Working with, not against, its natural rhythms.
How Acupuncture Supports Natural Labor Readiness
Traditional Chinese Medicine sees pregnancy as a yin (fluid, nourishing) state that transitions into yang (active, dynamic) during labor. The goal of acupuncture is to facilitate this shift—gently, naturally, and effectively.
- Encourages Cervical Ripening – Acupuncture increases blood flow to the uterus, softening the cervix in preparation for birth.
- Promotes Oxytocin Release – Stimulates the body’s natural oxytocin production, rather than relying on synthetic Pitocin.
- Optimizes Baby’s Positioning – Relaxes pelvic muscles & ligaments, encouraging proper fetal engagement.
- Regulates the Nervous System – Helps lower cortisol & adrenaline, allowing your body to shift into a relaxed, parasympathetic state for labor.
Acupuncture doesn’t “induce” labor—it simply helps your body get out of its own way.
Common Myths About Natural Labor Induction
- MYTH: Acupuncture will immediately put me into labor.
- TRUTH: Acupuncture doesn’t work like a Pitocin drip. Instead, it prepares the body over time. Some women go into labor after one session, while others need multiple treatments for cumulative effect.
- MYTH: Natural labor prep is only for women who want to avoid medical intervention.
- TRUTH: Even women planning a hospital birth or induction can benefit—acupuncture makes any labor process smoother by helping the body be more receptive to contractions. We also help to process any emotions that may be holding you in a state of fight or flight.
- MYTH: If I’m past 40 weeks, it’s too late to try.
- TRUTH: Acupuncture can support labor readiness at any stage, whether you’re 37 weeks preparing ahead of time or 41+ weeks facing a medical induction.

Turning a Breech Baby: Can Acupuncture & Moxibustion Help?
For women who are 31-40 weeks pregnant with a breech baby, acupuncture can also support optimal fetal positioning. The earlier we get started though, the better odds we have.
How It Works
Acupuncture relaxes the uterus & pelvis, creating space for baby to turn. Moxibustion increases fetal movement, stimulating BL67 (Zhiyin), a key point near the pinky toe that encourages baby’s head to descend. Holistic body alignment techniques help release tight ligaments that may be restricting movement. Most women need one acupuncture session plus 10 days of at-home moxibustion for the best results. Studies show that moxibustion has a 84% success rate in helping breech babies turn when done between 32-36 weeks. When the baby doesn’t turn, it’s typically because they were smarter than us and avoiding turning due to a cord wrapped around the neck or some other anatomical concern.
